Welcome to the Saxtons River Elementary School!
The Saxtons River Elementary School is a small K-5 school with one classroom at each grade level. We currently average about 20 students per classroom. We serve families from throughout the Town of Rockingham, including the Villages of Saxtons River and Bellows Falls. Students move on to the Bellows Falls Middle School after completing fifth grade. The school has a long tradition of academic excellence and high levels of parent and community volunteerism. It enjoys substantial community support. The 2012 Adequate Yearly Progress Report (based oon 2011 results) shows that SRES met AYP for all requirements in Reading and Mathematics. All participation requirements were met, and the Academic Indicator was met as well. Great job students and teachers!
Our mission statement is Soaring expectations plus Responsibility and respect Equals Success! We strive as a team to use student work and data to drive instruction. Following the RTI (Response to Intervention) model, we offer all students a time for specific skill support or enrichment in literacy. This is a daily instructional time during which students move as needed between skill groups based on assessment data. Students in grades 3-5 also have a daily mathematics skill group. The building core math program is Everyday Day Math, and we use a variety of materials to drive the language arts curriculum including Open Court, Handwriting without Tears, Kansas and Collins Writing, and all forms of literature. In all areas, the staff follows Vermont standards and local
curricular guidelines. We are doing lots of work to transition to Common Core standards.
The SRES Parent-Teachers’ Organization is a very active group in the life of the school. It has most recently been focusing on improving opportunities for after-school activities for students. There is an active winter sports program, spring arts interest groups, and a mentoring program with students from Vermont Academy, a neighboring prep school. In addition, we plan school-wide themes, such as wellness, diversity awareness, and curricular based topics.
