Nov 17, recipe request & Lexia
Kindergarten News
17 November 2011

Today, during our SKILLs block time, we used the computers in the Library for a literacy program called Lexia Reading.  This program provides students with explicit, systematic, and structured practice on foundational reading skills that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards.  The program offers differentiated practice as the students work independently.  The children advance to higher levels as they demonstrate proficiency.  If your child tells you we did "Lexia" today, that is what he or she is talking about!  We are signed up to use the library laptop lab every Thursday for our Lexia Reading time.  Additional times may be used as well.
The holiday season is upon us!  In Kindergarten, we will be learning about the many celebrations that take place at this time of year:  Thanksgiving,  Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, Christmas, and Kwanzaa.  We will be learning about the history of these holidays and the various customs of each.  If you have any traditions that you would like to share with the class, please let me know.  If you have any concerns about your child's exposure to these traditions, please have a word with me.

RECIPES WANTED!
For the next few weeks in math and science, we will be learning about measurement and procedure.  To help us understand these ideas, please send in a recipe for one of your child's favorite foods.  Ideally, this should be something that your child has made with you and with which your child is familiar. Your child will be describing the ingredients and procedure.  Perhaps the Thanksgiving holiday weekend would be an opportunity to try one out!  Traditional family favorites are a good choice.  We will not be making all of these recipes in class, so please do not send in ingredients.  I would like all the recipes by December 1st, if possible.   Thank you for your cooperation!
