Today your child's first pre-decodable book will go home with her or him.  These books are a series from a portion of one of our literacy programs:  "Imagine It!"  Once or twice a week your child will receive a book to read and to keep.  This is a chance for you and your child to practice reading skills at home.  The pre-decodables do not have words, but use illustrations, rebus pictures, and high frequency words to tell the story.
After the fifteen pre-decodables, the children will begin to bring home decodable books.   These books will contain both high frequency words and words that are 'decodable.'  Decodable words are those that your child may 'sound out' using the letter sounds that we have learned in class.  It is very important that you and your child share these books and that you give your child the opportunity to read to you.  Please make it a part of your daily routine.  It is a way to make a valuable contribution to your child's education.
Currently, we are working on recognizing and naming both the upper case and lower case letters of the alphabet.  Letters are all around us!  Please be sure to point them out to your child and ask them to tell you the name of the letter!
In math we are working on recognizing and creating patterns.  We are also learning about recognizing numbers 0-10 and counting numbers 0-20.  We also count back from 10.  These are great things to practice at home!
A word about birthdays:  a small treat is always welcome in kindergarten to celebrate your child's birthday.  We do not have any food allergies this year, so that is not a concern.  Please check in with me, just so I know that you will be sending something in and I can plan accordingly.
Some people choose to distribute birthday invitations in the classroom.  Invitations will only be distributed if there is an invitation for each child in the class.  There are no exceptions.  If you send in invitations to be distributed and there is not an invitation for each child, they will be returned to you.  While I certainly understand that you might desire a smaller guest list,  within the classroom, everyone needs to feel included.  I would appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
