In physical education this year, we are working on activities which will allow your child to do the following things:
1.  Move using concepts of body awareness, spatial awareness, effort, and relationships
2.  Demonstrate competency in combinations of manipulative, locomotor, and non-locomotor skills  performed individually and with others
3.  Demonstrate competency in games, gymnastics, rhythms and dance, and health and skill related concepts
4.  Know the rules and appropriate behaviors for selected physical activities
5.  Understand that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, self-expression, and communication
6.  Appreciate the value that physical activity has toward a healthy lifestyle

Students in grades 3.4.and 5 have been choreographing their own dances based on movement patterns that they will put to music.  They will also be taught different genres of dance.

Students in grades K-2 continue to practice basic movement skills as well as spatial awareness.  Students should be able to tell you about personal space, sharing space, and what a boundary is. We are now practicing different pathways (curve, straight, zig zag), directions (forward, backward, sideways, up, down, right, and left), levels (high, medium, and low), as well as moving manipulatives.  We have also been using rhythm sticks and practicing tapping to the beat of a piece of music.

Reminder that our monthly Walk to School day has been changed to Fridays this year.  We had 62 students join us for our January walk, and would like to see more students join us.  Our next Walk to School will be FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd.  Join us at the Village Market by 7:55 and walk with us to school!  It is fun and sets a good example for your child.

Please remember that as winter approaches your child needs sneakers on days that he/she has physical education.  The schedule is as follows:
                                                                        Mondays-K, 1, 2, 3, and 4
                                                                        Wednesdays-K and 5
                                                                        Fridays-1, 2, 3, 4, and 5

In order for your child to participate fully in the physical education program, he/she will need to be prepared for activity.  This includes:
1.  Sneakers-athletic footwear.  Street shoes, sandals, etc. are not appropriate as they do not afford the foot and ankle the proper support for the types of activities that we do.
2.  Clothing that allows your child to move freely, but fit appropriately.  We follow our school dress code.  A T-shirt and comfortable pants are the most appropriate type clothing for the activities that your child will be participating in this year.
3.  No jewelry of any kind -watches, rings, hoop/dangling earrings, bracelets, necklaces are unsafe in physical education and cannot be worn.

Your child will be bringing home information on which days he/she has physical education so that you can help him/her to be prepared for class.

Physical fitness assessments are conducted twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring.  These tests assess your child's level of fitness in the following areas:  cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility.  Results are sent home with report cards.

Students will be assessed using a variety of methods-written, oral, and performance tasks.  All students are expected to participate fully each class.  If your child needs to be excused for a medical reason, please send a note stating this and for how long you expect your child to be excused.  If you would like your child to limit activity due to a medical condition please state this for my information.  If a doctor's note is received, your child will not be allowed to participate until cleared by the doctor.

As always, I am available to answer any questions or concerns that you may have at any time.  Please contact the school and I will return your call as soon as possible.

I look forward to working with you and your child and appreciate your cooperation in helping your child in developing skills that will lead to a lifetime of healthy living!
